IMF warns US and UK to reduce rising public debt
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva has issued a warning to advanced economies, specifically the United States and the United Kingdom, regarding rising public debt and the increasing costs of servicing it. Georgieva stated that economic shocks, including geopolitical conflicts and energy instability, have driven debt levels upward, and urged policymakers to find the courage to implement necessary, though politically difficult, fiscal consolidation measures.
In the United Kingdom, debt interest costs reached £8.8 billion in August, the highest level for that month since 1997. Additionally, the UK public sector borrowing in August totaled £18.3 billion, exceeding official forecasts. In the United States, total debt has surpassed $40 trillion, having doubled over the last decade.
The IMF noted that global public debt is approaching 100 percent of global GDP. Georgieva recommended that governments prioritize reducing debt levels and ensuring that central banks fulfill their mandates regarding price stability.
