IMF completes economic programme reviews for Zimbabwe and Rwanda
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has completed staff reviews for economic programmes in both Zimbabwe and Rwanda, marking progress in fiscal reforms for both nations.
In Zimbabwe, the IMF approved the second review of the country’s Staff-Monitored Programme after it met principal quantitative and structural reform targets through June 2026. While Zimbabwe achieved fiscal restraint and stabilized economic indicators, the IMF noted a failure to meet minimum spending requirements for programs intended to protect vulnerable households. The Zimbabwean economy is projected to expand by 5 per cent in 2026, with inflation expected to remain in single digits.
In Rwanda, a staff-level agreement was reached regarding the first review of its Extended Credit Facility programme. This agreement paves the way for a potential disbursement of approximately $35.7 million following Executive Board approval in December. Rwanda has met all measurable economic targets for the period ending June 2026, showing progress in strengthening investment frameworks and domestic markets. The programme aims to address balance-of-payments pressures and sustain reforms amid tightening global financing conditions.
