IMF completes program reviews for El Salvador and Argentina

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has reached significant milestones in its economic programs for both El Salvador and Argentina.

In El Salvador, the IMF completed the second and third reviews of the country’s Extended Fund Facility (EFF), authorizing an immediate disbursement of approximately $138 million. The IMF noted that El Salvador’s economy has outperformed expectations, with a projected real GDP growth of 4.5% for 2026. Notably, the IMF granted a waiver regarding the country's breach of Bitcoin accumulation restrictions, acknowledging that recent increases were driven by private donations rather than public funds. The fund emphasized the need for continued fiscal reforms and transparency regarding crypto-assets.

In Argentina, a technical mission led by Joyce Wong has concluded its third review of the ongoing economic program. The mission analyzed public accounts, central bank reserves, and fiscal compliance. While the Argentine government has significantly exceeded its annual foreign currency purchase targets—buying over $14.2 billion against a $10 billion goal—the fiscal front remains a point of scrutiny. The government fell slightly below its primary surplus target during the first half of the year. A successful final approval by the IMF Executive Board could trigger a new disbursement of approximately $900 million to bolster central bank reserves.
