IMF conducts economic reviews and fiscal discussions in Honduras and Dominican Republic
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is actively engaging with several Latin American nations regarding fiscal discipline and macroeconomic stability. In Honduras, the IMF is conducting its fourth review of the country's economic situation. Representatives from the Honduran Private Sector Council (Cohep) and the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FEDECAMARA) met with IMF officials to discuss exchange rate policy, energy issues, and fuel costs. Business leaders expressed optimism regarding the IMF's view of electrical sector reforms intended to reduce losses at the National Electric Energy Company (ENEE) and attract investment.
Additionally, Honduran Finance Vice Minister Liliam Rivera participated in IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok, Thailand, to discuss financing opportunities and public investment portfolios.
In the Dominican Republic, the IMF has issued recommendations to address a potential debt spiral, where the government must borrow to pay interest on existing public debt. To achieve fiscal consolidation, the IMF has advised the Dominican Republic to reduce spending, implement sustainable tax transformations, and adopt specific fiscal rules to achieve surpluses.
