European delegates walk out of IMF meeting during Russian speech

During an International Monetary Fund (IMF) meeting in Bangkok, numerous delegates walked out of a session of the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC) in protest of Russia's participation. The walkout occurred when Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov began addressing the group in Russian.

Participants in the protest included representatives from France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and several Scandinavian and Baltic nations, including Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. Andrew Bailey, Governor of the Bank of England, and Joachim Nagel, President of the Bundesbank, were among those who left. Nagel estimated that approximately 50% of the attendees departed the room.

While European officials expressed that the war in Ukraine is an existential issue for the continent, the chair of the IMFC, Saudi Arabian Finance Minister Mohammed al-Jadaan, noted that a joint statement was still achieved and that all members agreed to the text. The United States has maintained a different stance, with Treasury officials supporting Russia's presence to ensure open dialogue.
