Tripura warns of power load shedding as IMF backs India GDP methodology

The Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) has warned of potential stage-wise automatic load shedding in certain areas of Tripura to maintain grid stability. This measure may be implemented during evening and night peak hours as electricity demand reaches approximately 540 MW, exceeding current availability.

The supply crunch is attributed to rising demand, reduced hydropower generation due to weak rainfall, and maintenance at coal-fired plants. While India has expanded renewable capacity, coal still accounts for nearly 70 per cent of national electricity generation, leaving the system vulnerable to fuel and weather-related disruptions.

Separately, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has endorsed India's revised GDP calculation methodology. Krishna Srinivasan, Director of the IMF's Asia and Pacific Department, stated that the revisions are “entirely consistent with the advice we've been giving them” and align with international best practices. The endorsement follows debates regarding India's reported 7.8 per cent GDP growth for the April-June 2026-27 quarter.
