IMF warns of sustained high energy prices and urges fiscal consolidation

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva has warned that energy prices, exacerbated by the conflict in Iran, are likely to remain elevated through 2027. Speaking in Singapore ahead of the IMF and World Bank annual meetings, Georgieva noted that seasonal demand in the Northern Hemisphere and the need for nations to replenish reserves could further intensify price pressures. Additionally, the rapid expansion of Artificial Intelligence is cited as a factor driving global price increases.

Georgieva urged industrialized nations to implement credible medium-term fiscal consolidation plans, warning against relying on AI-driven growth to solve debt issues. She advocated for a more restrictive monetary policy in many regions to manage rising costs, while praising the proactive interest rate adjustments made by the Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank, and the Bank of Japan.

In Germany, Economic Minister Katherina Reiche cautioned that despite improved economic projections, national growth remains fragile. Reiche called for urgent structural reforms, including the reduction of bureaucracy, more flexible working models, and competitive energy pricing, to ensure Germany's long-term industrial competitiveness.
