India projected to overtake Japan as 4th largest economy by 2027

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has released updated economic projections revealing significant shifts in global nominal GDP rankings. By 2027, India is expected to become the world's fourth-largest economy with a projected GDP of $4.52 trillion, overtaking Japan. This ascent follows strong domestic demand and a robust services sector, with India's 2026 growth forecast raised to 7%.

Japan is projected to slip to sixth place in the global rankings by 2027, falling behind both India and the United Kingdom. The Japanese economy faces challenges including an aging population, weak domestic investment, and the impact of a depreciating yen, with growth projected at just 0.7% for 2026.

Additionally, Brazil is forecasted to return to the position of the world's eighth-largest economy in 2027, surpassing Italy and Russia. The IMF expects Brazil's GDP to reach approximately $2.8 trillion that year, a position it is projected to maintain through at least 2031.
