IMF Chief Georgieva Visits Argentina, Meets President Milei and Explores Vaca Muerta

Kristalina Georgieva, managing director of the International Monetary Fund, arrived in Buenos Aires on Monday 27 July for a two‑day official visit. The agenda included a meeting with President Javier Milei at the Casa Rosada, a press conference together with Economy Minister Luis Caputo, talks with Central Bank head Santiago Bausili, a presentation at the Bolsa de Comercio, a lecture at the Palacio Libertad and engagements with business leaders, academics and students.

On Tuesday 28 July Georgieva travelled to Neuquén province to tour the Vaca Muerta shale oil field, meeting YPF executives, workers and local officials. The trip comes as the IMF is reviewing Argentina’s $1 billion disbursement under the extended facilities programme, monitoring fiscal‑surplus and reserve‑accumulation targets, and signals political backing for Milei’s reform agenda. It is the first visit by an IMF chief in eight years, the previous one being Christine Lagarde in 2018.
