IMF mission arrives in Argentina for third economic program review

An IMF technical mission, led by Joyce Wong, arrived in Argentina on September 21, 2026, to begin the third review of the Extended Fund Facility agreement. The mission aims to audit macroeconomic variables from the second quarter, specifically focusing on fiscal performance and international reserve accumulation.

A primary point of scrutiny is the fiscal surplus. The current agreement requires an annual primary fiscal surplus of 1.4% of GDP for 2026. However, the government has projected a slightly lower surplus of 1.3%, a deviation that officials suggest may be addressed through a waiver. This fiscal gap was partly influenced by the postponement of income tax filings.

In contrast, the central bank's performance regarding foreign currency has exceeded targets. The Central Bank of Argentina has accumulated over USD 14.2 billion in purchases, surpassing the USD 10 billion annual goal. Successful completion of this review is essential for Argentina to access a potential new disbursement of approximately USD 900 million.

The review coincides with a significant debt repayment of approximately USD 800 million due to the IMF on September 25, 2026. Additionally, Economy Minister Luis Caputo is traveling to New York for UN meetings, which will limit his direct participation in all technical meetings with the IMF delegation.
