IMF mission to Senegal scheduled for August 19 to September 1
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) will conduct a mission to Dakar, Senegal, from August 19 to September 1, 2026. Led by mission chief Mercedes Vera Martin, the team will engage with Senegalese authorities and various economic and social actors to discuss economic policies and reforms.
The primary objective of the visit is to seek a convergence of views regarding a potential new financing agreement. The IMF aims to support Senegal in maintaining macroeconomic stability and promoting sustainable, inclusive growth. This follows a June mission where the IMF recognized improvements in Senegal's public finance management, budget governance, and transparency, though it noted that further action is required to resolve issues related to misreporting.
Economist Amath Ndiaye, from Cheikh Anta Diop University, has characterized a new agreement with the IMF as “indispensable” and “unavoidable.” He suggests that such a partnership could serve as a lever to restore the confidence of international financial partners and provide a framework for negotiating the restructuring of public debt.
