IMF conducts mission in Senegal to negotiate new financing agreement

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is conducting a mission in Dakar to discuss a potential new financing agreement with Senegalese authorities. This mission follows the discovery of discrepancies in public finance data, often referred to as ‘misreporting,’ which led to the suspension of a previous $1.8 billion program.

To restore credibility and secure a new agreement, the IMF has demanded several corrective measures. These include the centralization of public debt management to prevent the concealment of financial commitments, significant improvements in the quality of financial data, and audits of accumulated state arrears.

Senegalese authorities have already begun implementing reforms, such as unifying debt management functions and reducing the public deficit. Economic experts emphasize that the success of these negotiations depends on Senegal’s ability to present long-term strategic models that ensure economic sovereignty while maintaining transparency and fiscal discipline.
