IMF urges central banks to maintain focus on price stability

IMF Spokesperson Julie Kozack has advised central banks to maintain their focus on price stability targets, noting that the disinflation process following the 2022 cost-of-living crisis has stalled somewhat.

Despite ongoing conflict in the Middle East, Kozack stated that the global economy remains resilient and is continuing on a 3 percent growth path. However, she warned of high uncertainty and noted that the economy is being pulled in different directions by an energy-driven supply shock and an artificial intelligence-driven demand shock.

Kozack highlighted that the energy shock is not yet over, as oil and natural gas prices remain elevated. Furthermore, she reported that global public debt has reached nearly 100 percent of global GDP, marking its highest level since World War II, and predicted that these debt levels will continue to rise.

In a recent update to the World Economic Outlook, the IMF revised its 2026 global inflation forecast to 4.7 percent. Kozack also noted that rising bond yields in key advanced economies, such as the United States, France, and Japan, are impacting all countries.
