IMF warns high interest rates will worsen public debt crisis
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) warns that a high-interest-rate environment will exacerbate the public debt crisis for many major economies. Economists Era Dabla-Norris and Rodrigo Valdés note that when existing debt levels are already high, rising rates lead to a greater deterioration of both debt and public deficits.
This warning follows recent monetary tightening by the world's most influential central banks. The Federal Reserve raised interest rates on September 16 in response to US inflation, which has remained above the 2% target for 65 consecutive months. Similarly, the European Central Bank implemented a rate hike on September 11, marking its second increase in four months. ECB President Christine Lagarde indicated that inflation is expected to remain well above the target for a prolonged period, suggesting further hikes remain possible.
