Nasdaq and IMF weigh potential and risks of asset tokenization

Nasdaq CEO Adena Friedman suggests that the tokenization of financial assets, such as Treasury bonds, stocks, and money market funds, could unlock tens of billions of dollars currently tied up as collateral. By moving these assets onto blockchains, liquidity could become more fluid, enabling near-instantaneous transfers and supporting a transition toward 24/7 continuous market trading.

However, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has issued warnings regarding the rapid expansion of tokenized markets. While acknowledging the benefits of fractional ownership and round-the-clock access, the IMF highlights significant risks, including market fragmentation, high volatility, and low liquidity compared to traditional markets. The organization also noted that the current ecosystem is highly concentrated among a few issuers and jurisdictions, primarily in the United States.

Key challenges identified for the scaling of tokenized finance include the need for legal certainty, regulatory clarity, interoperability between different platforms, and the establishment of secure settlement environments. The IMF emphasized that while the current scale of tokenization remains limited relative to the $300 trillion traditional market, systemic risks such as increased leverage and potential contagion must be managed as the sector grows.
