IMF's Kristalina Georgieva calls for global stablecoin regulation
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva has called for coordinated international regulatory policies regarding tokenization and stablecoins. Speaking at the Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium, Georgieva noted that while these financial innovations could make the global financial system more 'fluid' and reduce the cost and speed of high-value cross-border payments, they also introduce significant new risks.
Georgieva warned that increased liquidity in the financial system could lead to the faster spread of risks, potentially increasing the cost of policy errors. She specifically highlighted concerns that stablecoins could be used for tax evasion and could make capital controls more permeable.
Furthermore, Georgieva advised emerging economies to strengthen their foreign exchange reserve buffers and maintain strict policy discipline. She emphasized that the financing advantages provided by technology cannot replace responsible macroeconomic policies.
