IMIDA develops brewery byproduct feed for aquaculture mullet

Researchers at the Murcian Institute for Agricultural and Environmental Research and Development (IMIDA) have developed an experimental feed for aquaculture mullet using brewery byproducts. Trials indicate that incorporating 12.5% brewer's spent grain into the diet allows the fish to grow larger and more effectively than those fed with traditional fishmeal-based feed.

The project, supported by European funding through 2027, aims to reduce the aquaculture industry's dependence on traditional fishmeal, lower production costs, and minimize environmental impact. By repurposing industrial waste from the brewing sector, the initiative seeks to diversify sustainable aquaculture production in the Murcia region.

Regional Minister Joaquín Buendía noted that the mullet is a highly adaptable species capable of thriving in various water temperatures and salinity levels. Beyond cost savings, the project aims to support local industries, such as artisanal salting, by providing high-quality mullet and roe.
