Immigrant regularization boosts foreign employment in Murcia and Navarra

Immigrant regularization processes are driving significant increases in foreign worker affiliation with the Social Security in Spain, notably in the regions of Murcia and Navarra.

In Murcia, foreign employment in the primary sector reached 81,000 contributors in July, with foreign workers now representing 15.6% of total affiliates. Key sectors driving this growth include agriculture, services, hospitality, and caregiving. Labor union Comisiones Obreras notes that much of this workforce was previously part of the informal economy and that this influx supports the public pension system.

In Navarra, foreign worker affiliation reached a historic high of 44,561 in July. Since the start of an extraordinary regularization process in April, the region has seen 4,299 new foreign affiliates, accounting for 41.24% of the total employment increase in that period. The manufacturing, construction, and hospitality sectors are the primary employers of foreign workers in Navarra.
