Luis Manuel Aviles Roa, a Nicaraguan national who has resided in the United States for 19 years, was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol during a vehicle stop in Key West, Florida. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed the arrest, stating that Aviles Roa entered the country illegally and is currently in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) pending removal proceedings.

The arrest has drawn significant attention because his son, Joshua Aviles, is an active-duty U.S. Navy sailor currently deployed in the Middle East aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln. Joshua Aviles, who has been at sea for over nine months, expressed the emotional toll of the news via social media, noting the difficulty of maintaining focus during 12-hour shifts while his father faces deportation.

Aviles Roa’s family maintains that he possesses a valid work permit, Social Security card, and driver's license, and was in the process of awaiting approval for a green card. However, DHS officials emphasized that having a family member serving in the military does not grant legal status or immunity from immigration enforcement laws.
