Immigration enforcement and border security measures under scrutiny in Ireland and UK
New data regarding deportation detention in Ireland has prompted discussions concerning the management of immigration enforcement and access to legal safeguards. The figures highlight the scale of individuals held in custody, often due to risks of absconding, identity verification needs, or preparations for removal. However, detention does not always result in immediate deportation, as cases may be delayed by court proceedings, documentation issues, or destination country conditions.
In the United Kingdom, Reform UK has proposed new measures to address immigration at the Irish land border. MP Danny Kruger plans to advocate for immigration spot checks on buses and trains traveling between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The party pledges to impose a £10,000 civil penalty on transport operators for every passenger found to be entering Northern Ireland illegally. Reform UK intends to use the revenue from these fines to fund deportations and further border enforcement efforts, arguing that the current border is being used as a backdoor route into the UK.
