Immigration legal cases involving Mozambican and Angolan nationals

In South Africa, a Mpumalanga Regional Court sentenced Carlos David Mlambo, a Mozambican national, for violating the Immigration Act. Mlambo was arrested in July at the Lebombo border post after officials discovered 16 Mozambican passports that did not belong to anyone present at the border. Mlambo admitted he was entrusted with the documents to facilitate processing at both Mozambican and South African control points. He received a sentence of five years in prison, with two years suspended on the condition that he does not commit similar offenses. The court ordered the passports to be handed to the Department of Home Affairs for further investigation.

In the United States, an Angolan national, Adnero Pinto Sebastiao, has requested a federal judge to dismiss a legal challenge regarding his detention by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Sebastiao had filed an emergency habeas corpus petition following his arrest in Lewiston, Maine, on September 3, which sought to prevent his removal from the country while the legality of his detention was reviewed. U.S. District Judge Stacey D. Neumann granted the request to dismiss the case on September 14, ending the proceeding without a ruling on the merits of the detention. The Department of Homeland Security had previously stated that Sebastiao overstayed his admission to the country.
