Immune cell research reveals new insights into vaccines and longevity

Researchers have identified a specific population of monocyte-derived cells in the lungs that could improve the efficacy of nasal influenza vaccines. According to a study in Nature Immunology, these cells produce galectin-1 and support tissue-resident memory T cells. This discovery is significant because conventional intramuscular vaccines often fail to establish robust, lasting immunity directly within the respiratory tract where infections begin.

In a separate study published in Cell Reports, researchers at Osaka University observed a unique immune pattern in centenarians. The study found that the proportion of cytotoxic CD4 T lymphocytes (CTL) increases significantly with age, rising from a median of 4% in individuals aged 70–99 to 17.6% in those aged 110 and older.

These CTL cells, which typically multiply when the immune system is under attack, showed clonal expansions similar to those found in cancer patients, despite the centenarians having no cancer diagnoses. This suggests these cells may provide a protective immune response against nascent cancer cells, potentially contributing to extreme longevity.
