Immunologist Alfredo Korel recommends fermented foods for immunity

Spanish immunologist Alfredo Korel has highlighted the importance of gut health and regular consumption of fermented foods to support the immune system. During a podcast appearance, Korel emphasized that simple daily habits, such as proper nutrition and physical activity, play a significant role in protecting the body from infections.

Korel specifically recommends the daily consumption of foods containing beneficial bacteria, such as yogurt and kefir. While he suggests one yogurt per day as a general guideline, he noted exceptions for individuals who do not consume animal products or are lactose intolerant. For these groups, he suggested fermented plant-based alternatives made from oats, soy, or coconut, as well as fermented vegetables like sauerkraut and kimchi.

Regarding the quality of these products, Korel noted that while homemade yogurt and kefir offer certain advantages, hygiene during preparation is critical. He also stated that high-quality options are available in stores, provided consumers check the ingredient labels carefully.
