Immunotherapy research targets HPV-driven and triple-negative breast cancers

Recent academic research has explored various immunotherapeutic approaches to combat aggressive cancer types, specifically focusing on HPV-positive head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC).

In studies regarding HPV-driven HNSCC, research has examined how immune checkpoint inhibitors like ipilimumab and nivolumab can enhance the cytotoxic functions of T cells and natural killer (NK) cells. These therapies aim to block inhibitory signaling pathways, such as the CTLA-4 receptor, to release the immune system’s brakes and improve tumor response.

Regarding TNBC, research has investigated methods to target cancer stem cells (CSCs) that drive treatment resistance and immune evasion. Potential strategies include using flavonoid supplements like quercetin and luteolin to inhibit immune-suppressing enzymes, and combining chemotherapeutic agents with inhibitors to sensitize resistant cell populations to anti-PD-L1 therapies. Additionally, the repurposing of bacterial effector proteins has been explored to inhibit signaling pathways associated with tumor growth.
