Immunotherapy trials show promise as alternatives to chemotherapy

Researchers are advancing personalized immunotherapy treatments that may offer alternatives to traditional chemotherapy for cancer patients.

Moffitt Cancer Center has launched a clinical trial for early-stage breast cancer patients. The protocol uses a personalized dendritic cell vaccine combined with targeted antibodies, such as HER2-targeted therapy. This method involves harvesting a patient's own dendritic cells, training them against specific tumor antigens in a lab, and reinfusing them to instruct T-cells to destroy cancer cells. Early results have shown complete pathological responses in some participants with Stage 1 and Stage 2 HER2-driven breast cancer.

In a separate development, clinical trials involving mRNA cancer vaccines are showing promise in treating melanoma. A trial combining an mRNA vaccine with immunotherapy, developed by Merck and Moderna, has been highlighted for its potential to fight tumors. Clinical trial participants have shared personal accounts of the treatment's impact on their recovery following high-risk diagnoses.
