IMO: 400 ships and 6,000 seafarers stuck in Persian Gulf
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has reported that approximately 400 ships and 6,000 seafarers remain unable to safely exit the Persian Gulf due to ongoing conflict in the Middle East. IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez described the situation in the Strait of Hormuz—a strategic waterway handling one-fifth of global oil trade—as “unresolved.”
Since the conflict began on February 28, the United Nations has verified at least 70 attacks on international maritime transport, resulting in the deaths of 19 seafarers. Dominguez warned that the disruption of vital supply chains for fuel and chemical fertilizers would have “severe” consequences for global economies and communities.
While the United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding in June to begin negotiations, talks have stalled over disagreements regarding security guarantees and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Dominguez has called for renewed political will from member states and the shipping industry to restore freedom of navigation.
