IMO adopts new remote inspection framework for tankers and bulk carriers

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted a new framework for the use of Remote Inspection Techniques (RIT) during the survey of bulk carriers and oil tankers. Under Resolution MSC. 584(111), amendments to the 2011 ESP Code will enter into force on January 1, 2028.

The new framework establishes standardized requirements for Remote Inspection Technique Systems (RITS), which utilize tools such as drones, cameras, sensors, and robotic devices to allow surveyors to examine ship structures without physical access. This replaces the previous practice where RIT was used on a case-by-case basis under “other equivalent means” subject to flag administration agreement.

The amendments apply to periodic surveys of bulk carriers and oil tankers commencing on or after the effective date, regardless of the vessel’s construction date. The framework covers RIT systems, equipment, firms, survey planning, execution, and reporting to ensure consistent and comprehensive inspections.
