Imo State court sentences woman for abusing 14-year-old niece
A Magistrate Court in Imo State has sentenced Rose Okon to six months in prison for the assault of her 14-year-old niece, Favour Emmanuel. The court, presided over by Chief Magistrate C. J. Nkwoada, provided the option for Okon to pay a fine of N50,000 in lieu of the prison term.
Okon pleaded guilty to charges of assault after it was established that she poured hot water on the minor's head and body, causing grievous harm. The prosecution presented photographic evidence of the injuries and statements from the victim and the Stand For Humanity Foundation.
The arrest was initiated following a petition by the Stand For Humanity Foundation. Chidiebube Okeoma, president of the foundation, stated that the conviction serves as a warning that child abuse is a punishable offense and affirmed the organization's commitment to clamping down on such abuse.
