Imo State postpones local government elections indefinitely

The Imo State Government has indefinitely postponed the local government elections originally scheduled for Saturday, September 26, 2026. The decision follows legal challenges brought by opposition political parties.

According to the Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) filed lawsuits to halt the poll. The plaintiffs allege that the processes leading to the election failed to comply with statutory requirements.

The state government stated it would not proceed with the election while these legal challenges are pending, noting that a law-abiding administration must await judicial resolution. The court has adjourned the hearing of these suits until October 30, 2026. A new date for the elections will be determined once the legal impediments are resolved.
