Imola designated as backup for Qatar and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix
Formula 1 has designated the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola, Italy, as a potential 'Plan B' for the season finale should the Grand Prix in Qatar and Abu Dhabi be canceled due to instability in the Middle East.
Formula One Management (FOM) has reportedly authorized the construction of temporary grandstands at Imola to ensure readiness. FOM will cover all construction costs to eliminate financial risk for the circuit organizers. While a decision on the final locations was originally expected in mid-September, the ongoing situation in the Middle East has delayed the announcement until potentially mid-October.
Driver Max Verstappen expressed reservations about racing in the Middle East given the proximity of conflict, stating that while he enjoys visiting those countries, it may not be wise to travel there under current circumstances. Regarding the Imola alternative, Verstappen noted that December temperatures in Italy could be as low as 15 degrees Celsius with rain, which could create challenging racing conditions.
