Formula 1 considers Imola as alternative for 2026 season finale

Formula 1 is considering moving its 2026 season finale to the Imola circuit in Italy due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The potential shift would replace the scheduled Grands Prix in Qatar and Abu Dhabi if security concerns persist.

Relocating the championship decider to the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari on December 6 presents significant logistical challenges. Because the circuit lacks lighting infrastructure for night racing and the European winter results in an early sunset (approximately 4:34 p.m. local time), the race would likely need an earlier start time, potentially between 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. local time. This adjustment would also impact the timing of practice sessions and qualifying.

Reports indicate that F1 has already begun making hotel reservations in the Imola region. A formal decision by leadership, including Stefano Domenicali, is expected in early October, potentially contingent on international travel advisories. From a sporting perspective, the move could see Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli potentially clinching the championship on home soil.
