Impact Minerals' Alluminous reaches battery separator milestone

Impact Minerals (ASX:IPT) reported that its 50%‑owned associate Alluminous has completed the first technical milestone in a joint development programme with New York‑based battery technology firm Charge CCCV (C4V). The particle‑engineering phase proved that Alluminous high‑purity alumina (HPA) can be processed to meet the particle‑size specifications for lithium‑ion battery separator coatings while retaining its chemical purity and alpha crystal form. Measurements showed 90% of particles under 3 µm and 10% under 500 nm, and the material was formed into a stable, sodium‑free, water‑based slurry suitable for coating trials.

The programme now moves to battery‑architecture development, separator‑coating optimisation and electrochemical testing in full cells, with the aim of benchmarking performance against commercial separator materials and gathering data for future customer qualification. Impact Minerals Managing Director Mike Jones said the results bring the collaboration “significantly closer to potential commercial qualification for advanced battery applications”, while Alluminous Managing Director David Leavy praised the technical achievement and noted progress from plant commissioning to downstream validation over the past year.
