Impact of late-night eating on metabolism and weight
Research indicates that the relationship between late-night eating, weight gain, and psychological well-being is complex and influenced by several factors beyond just timing.
A 2022 controlled study found that in laboratory settings, eating later was associated with increased hunger and decreased energy expenditure in adults with overweight or obesity, even when caloric intake remained constant. However, these metabolic findings in a study environment do not necessarily predict an individual's future weight gain in real-world scenarios.
Experts emphasize that total daily caloric intake, sleep quality, physical activity, and overall lifestyle are critical components. Simply skipping dinner to avoid weight gain may not be an effective solution without considering the total nutritional intake for the day. Factors such as medication, physical conditions, and individual eating patterns also play significant roles in weight management.
