Impala Platinum shifts stance on Waterberg PGM joint venture

Impala Platinum (Implats) and HCI Consolidated Investments have expressed shifting perspectives on the Waterberg Joint Venture (JV), a large-scale platinum group metals (PGM) project led by Toronto-listed Platinum Group Metals (PTM).

Previously hindered by delays and smelting challenges, the project is now being reconsidered as a phased, smaller-scale development rather than a single large implementation. Implats CEO Nico Muller indicated that the current plans for a more manageable mine size are “far more attractive” than previous versions. This shift is supported by a more positive outlook for PGM demand, driven by industrial uses and slower electric vehicle adoption.

HCI CEO Johnny Copelyn noted that the project has faced significant headwinds, specifically regarding smelting and refining options. Challenges include government restrictions on smelting concentrate outside South Africa and difficulties in securing palatable pricing from local refining operators. The new strategy involves smaller developments that are more financially viable, potentially focusing on mining zones with higher gold content.
