Impala Platinum shuts Rustenburg mine after two fatal locomotive crashes

Impala Platinum (Implats) suspended operations at its Rustenburg complex in South Africa following two separate underground locomotive accidents that killed six workers. The incidents occurred on 6 July and 24 July, prompting a four‑day "safety reset" from 24 to 28 July. Rustenburg employs about 51,500 people and contributes roughly half of Implats' total platinum‑group metal output.

During the shutdown the company will carry out workplace inspections, targeted training, a mass employee‑engagement session and will appoint independent specialists to assess its safety systems. CEO Nico Muller said the action reflects a belief that strong safety outcomes require continuous vigilance, while spokesperson Johan Theron noted that the locomotives are equipped with proximity sensors designed to prevent such collisions.

Implats said the impact on production will be evaluated when operations resume. The incident highlights ongoing safety challenges in South Africa's deep‑level mining sector, which supplies a large share of global platinum used in catalytic converters.
