Imperatriz bank robbery ends in arrests after hostage standoff

Two suspects were arrested following an armed robbery and hostage situation at a Banco do Brasil branch in Imperatriz, Maranhão, on Tuesday morning. The suspects entered the agency on Avenida Bernardo Sayão, overpowered security guards, and demanded access to the treasury.

During the incident, approximately 10 to 14 hostages were held inside the building. A security guard managed to hide in a bathroom and alert the Municipal Guard, triggering a response from the Military Police, Civil Police, Special Operations Group (GOE), and the Tactical Air Center (CTA), which provided aerial support.

Following a negotiation lasting between 40 minutes and an hour, the suspects surrendered to law enforcement. Authorities recovered firearms and the money found on the suspects, though Banco do Brasil confirmed that no money was stolen from the bank and no physical damage was done to the premises. No injuries were reported among the hostages or staff. Governor Carlo Brandão issued a statement praising the joint operation of the security forces.
