Imperia and the French Riviera share maritime heritage

The coastal regions of Imperia in Italy and the French Riviera share a deep-rooted maritime and sailing heritage. Although currently divided by national borders, the coastline was historically unified; Nice, for example, remained part of the House of Savoy until 1860, when it transitioned from the Kingdom of Sardinia to France following an agreement between Cavour and Napoleon III.

During the Belle Époque, this temperate coastline became a premier destination for European aristocracy seeking winter retreats. This era saw the rise of sailing as a recreational sport, with organized clubs emerging on both sides of the border, such as the Société des Régates de Cannes in 1859 and various regatta traditions in Sanremo during the early 20th century.
