Imperia cinema cat Gatto euthanized after being taken by tourists

On the night of July 27, 2026, after the screening of Christopher Nolan’s "Odissea" at the historic Cinema Centrale in Imperia, Italy, the theatre’s long‑standing mascot – a roughly 20‑year‑old black‑and‑white cat named Gatto – was taken from the cinema garden by a tourist couple. Surveillance footage captured a woman carrying the cat away, later joined by a man in a car.

The cat was subsequently delivered to a veterinary clinic where it was euthanised. Cinema manager Mirco Rubaudo posted on Facebook seeking the individuals responsible and, after learning of the animal’s fate, announced Gatto’s death and expressed sorrow.
