Imperia residents protest tourism focus and housing costs

Residents in Imperia participated in the Marcjola, a sporting and political demonstration organized by the social center ‘La Talpa e l’Orologio’. The event aimed to highlight the daily struggles of local inhabitants under the slogan ‘A province for those who live it’.

Protesters criticized the city for becoming a ‘showcase for tourists,’ arguing that the needs of residents and workers are being sidelined. Key grievances included the housing market, where high prices driven by short-term rentals on platforms like Airbnb and Booking make renting nearly impossible. Organizers suggested implementing regulations similar to those in Marseille, Barcelona, and New York.

Additionally, participants raised concerns regarding inadequate public transportation for students and workers, contrasting the lack of reliable transit with the presence of cycling paths and autonomous vehicle technology.
