Imperial and Yuma Valleys Under Extreme Heat Warning

The National Weather Service office in Phoenix has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for the Imperial and Yuma valleys, covering Parker Valley and Yuma in Arizona and the Imperial, Palo Verde, and surrounding valleys in California. The warning runs until 8 p.m. on 3 August and forecasts daytime temperatures of 110 °F to 120 °F with dew points in the mid‑60s to low‑70s, creating a major heat risk.

Heat‑related illnesses such as cramps, exhaustion and stroke are expected to rise, especially among farm workers who must continue fieldwork, packing, irrigation and equipment maintenance. The agency advises frequent shaded or air‑conditioned rest breaks, hydration, lightweight clothing and, where possible, scheduling strenuous outdoor tasks for early morning or evening. Public cooling shelters are available in some areas.

Because overnight lows remain unusually warm, workers receive little relief between shifts, increasing the cumulative strain of multi‑day heat exposure. The warning targets those who cannot stay indoors, emphasizing that heat stroke can be fatal and urging immediate medical attention if symptoms appear.
