Imperial Beach shoreline closed due to sewage contamination

San Diego County health officials have closed the Imperial Beach shoreline to all water contact due to sewage contamination flowing from the Tijuana River. The closure also extends to the shoreline at Border Field State Park and the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge.

The San Diego County Department of Environmental Health and Quality warned that the ocean water contains sewage and may cause illness. These areas will remain closed until sampling and field observations confirm they are safe for contact. No reopening date has been set, as sewage flow can persist for several days.

In addition to the closures, several other locations are under bacteria advisories because levels exceed state health standards. These include the Oceanside Pier, the San Luis Rey River outlet in Oceanside, Harbor Beach in Oceanside, North Cove at Vacation Isle in Mission Bay, and La Jolla Children’s Pool.
