Imperial Beach teenager arrested for suspected antisemitic graffiti

An 18-year-old man, Kristoffer Wilheim Vonhassel, was arrested in Imperial Beach on suspicion of committing a series of antisemitic graffiti attacks on South Bay homes. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office booked him on 12 offenses, including six counts of vandalism and six counts of property damage motivated by civil-rights violations.

The graffiti, written in black permanent marker, was discovered on Seacoast Drive and Elm Avenue on September 13, with additional hate-oriented tags appearing in an alleyway on Elm Avenue six days later. Authorities used surveillance video to identify the suspect, who was apprehended Tuesday morning near the site of the most recent incident. At the time of his arrest, officials noted he was in possession of an electronic device capable of interacting with wireless signals used by garage doors and gates.

Vonhassel’s parents have denied the allegations, stating that neither he nor the family holds antisemitic beliefs. They expressed concern regarding the impact of the case on his future. The suspect is scheduled to appear in court this Thursday.
