Imperial County prosecutor addresses rise in school threats
Imperial County District Attorney George Marquez has addressed a rise in school threats, noting that four such incidents have been reported since the start of the current school year in September.
Marquez explained that under current California law, school threats are often classified as misdemeanors. In some instances, offenders may undergo a six-month rehabilitation period, after which their records are cleared. Due to laws protecting minors, authorities are limited in the specific details they can provide regarding these incidents, even when arrests are made.
The District Attorney emphasized the importance of youth mental health and parental vigilance, citing bullying as a potential trigger for such behavior. He urged parents to communicate closely with their children and schools to identify and report suspicious activity.
