Imperial Crypt reopens in São Paulo
The Imperial Crypt, located beneath the Independence Monument in São Paulo, has reopened to the public on September 7, marking Brazil’s 204th anniversary of independence. The site, which houses the remains of Dom Pedro I, Empress Maria Leopoldina, and Empress Amélia, had been closed since 2022 for revitalization works.
The São Paulo City Hall invested R$ 5.3 million in the project. Improvements include the installation of air conditioning, accessibility upgrades, new restroom facilities, and the conservation of historical elements such as the yellow marble ceiling and the bronze near the imperial sarcophagi.
The reopening coincides with the launch of the exhibition ‘Representações da Nação: O Monumento à Independência e a Cripta Imperial,’ curated by Marly Rodrigues. The monument itself, which commemorates various historical movements including the Inconfidência Mineira and the Pernambucan Revolution, was completed in 1926 following a design by Italian artist Ettore Ximenes.
