Imperial Valley celebrates Mexican Independence Day

Residents of the Imperial Valley gathered over a weekend to celebrate the 216th anniversary of Mexico’s independence movement. The festivities, coordinated by the Mexican Consulate in Calexico, included cultural performances, traditional food, and the Grito ceremony.

One major event, ‘Día del Grito: Fiesta Mexicana,’ was held at the Imperial Valley Mall in coordination with the Brawley Chamber of Commerce. The celebration featured mariachi music, folkloric dancing, and Mexican crafts. A military honor guard from the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California participated in the traditional Grito ceremony.

Rocío Vázquez Álvarez, head consul of the Mexican Consulate in Calexico, noted that these events serve to celebrate Mexican heritage and strengthen community partnerships. She also observed a historical increase in Mexican nationality applications, noting that recent efforts to simplify administrative procedures have contributed to this trend.
