Implementing and updating TLS security configurations
Securing web connections through Transport Layer Security (TLS) is increasingly common due to the availability of free certificates from providers like Let’s Encrypt. While many hosting services automate certificate management, maintaining secure server configurations often requires manual intervention.
For local network applications, such as home wikis, using TLS provides a defense-in-depth security measure against compromised devices on the same network. Options for local implementation include using self-signed certificates, which require manual browser acceptance, or running a private Certificate Authority.
On the server side, specifically with NginX, security standards evolve. Maintaining high security scores, such as an ‘A’ rating on SSL Lab’s SSL Server Test, requires updating cipher lists to remove outdated or insecure ciphers and ensuring protocols like TLSv1.2 and TLSv1.3 are correctly configured.
