Hapag-Lloyd acquires 25% stake in Rotterdam's Maasvlakte II terminal

Hapag-Lloyd has agreed to acquire a 25% stake in APM Terminals Maasvlakte II B.V. in the Port of Rotterdam. The investment, managed through Hapag-Lloyd’s Hanseatic Global Terminals division, aims to secure long-term automated container handling capacity and strengthen the company’s presence in key European infrastructure.

The terminal is a critical hub for the Gemini Cooperation, a strategic partnership between Hapag-Lloyd and A.P. Moller – Maersk. While Hapag-Lloyd will hold the stake, APM Terminals will retain full operational control of the facility.

Maasvlakte II is currently undergoing a significant expansion project. This includes adding 1,000 meters of deep-sea berth to reach a total of 2,000 meters, increasing yard capacity, adding four rail tracks, and deploying automated terminal tractors. Once completed, the terminal is expected to reach an annual handling capacity of approximately 5.4 million TEUs.
