Importance of knowing blood types and Rhesus factors
Knowing one's blood type is critical for medical emergencies, surgeries, blood donations, and during pregnancy. The classification is based on the AB0 system, which identifies specific protein structures, known as antigens, on red blood cells. Individuals are categorized as type A, B, AB, or 0 based on the presence of these antigens.
In addition to the AB0 system, the Rhesus factor is a vital component of blood typing. This factor determines whether the D-antigen is present on red blood cells, resulting in a positive or negative designation. Accurate identification of both the blood group and the Rhesus factor is essential to prevent dangerous immune reactions during transfusions and pregnancies.
The AB0 system was discovered in the early 20th century by Austrian physician Karl Landsteiner, who received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1930 for this work. The Rhesus factor was subsequently described in the 1940s.
