Venezuela has signed a definitive contract addendum with the Argentine-American company IMPSA to rehabilitate and modernize the Tocoma and Macagua hydroelectric plants. The agreement, signed by Corpoelec and Venezuelan officials, aims to strengthen the National Electric System (SEN) following recent periods of high electricity demand, which reached a peak of 15,726 MW.

The project is structured in phases, with an immediate goal to incorporate 160 MW into the national grid within 90 days through the activation of Macagua Units 5 and 6. The broader plan aims to recover a total of 672 MW over 24 months, specifically 432 MW from Tocoma (Units 1 and 2) and 240 MW from Macagua (Units 4, 5, and 6). The long-term master plan targets a combined capacity of up to 2,640 MW between both facilities.

This initiative comes amid ongoing challenges with electricity stability and calls for energy conservation within the country. The U.S. Embassy in Caracas noted that these works are part of a broader framework for economic stabilization and recovery.
