IMSS-Bienestar faces CNDH scrutiny over obstetric violence

The IMSS-Bienestar institution is facing scrutiny following three recommendations from the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) within a single month regarding alleged obstetric violence.

The most recent recommendation, issued on August 20, 2026, calls for full reparations following the death of a Nahuatl indigenous woman in Tehuacán, Puebla. According to the CNDH, medical negligence and a lack of adequate supervision at the Hospital de la Mujer y Neonatología led to massive obstetric hemorrhage and cardiac arrest for the mother. The newborn also suffered severe asphyxia due to the lack of timely medical intervention.

The CNDH has demanded that IMSS-Bienestar provide compensation to the family, offer psychological support, and implement administrative controls and training to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
